MTB-MLE

Mother tongue based multi lingual education (MTB-MLE) is at the heart of IPN’ mission. We support communities, local partners and governments in their efforts to ensure that all children–including the most vulnerable and marginalized—have the right to a quality education in their own mother tongue. Recognizing that education can be a force for either inclusion and acceptance or exclusion and conflict, IPN engages a wide variety of people to ensure that schools play a positive role in building a culture of peace.

IPN has education programs in Kohistan initially and established mother tongue based schooling system since March 2014. It has completed its 10 years journey in March 2024 and 110 Students consisting both boys and girls have graduated from this free school in the area.

Our education projects encompass a range of activities, including early childhood development, and primary, secondary, and higher education in both formal and non-formal settings. IPN is able to have a broad and deep reach through its national and local networks of schools, as well as through public and private entities.

The founding fathers of IPN and all those associated with it and those in the network believes that in the light of the 1973 Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the latest research based evidences, Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) is the right of every child.

WHAT IS MTB-MLE?

Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) is an approach in learning & imparting education with the use of learners’ mother tongue as Medium of Instruction (MoI) & Text books produced in the mother tongue of the learners. It is an educational process of strong foundation building of the learners in their own mother tongue (L1) with a good bridging mechanism to national language (L2) & others (L3).

WHY MTB-MLE?

The UNESCO based MLE model is research proven globally. It provides strong base for the learners to build their educational building upon it in any language at higher levels. Contents to be taught are taken from the immediate surrounding of the learners in their own mother tongue with the same language as MoI at school. Sharpens learners’ IQ level. Less or no drop out rate due to conducive learning environment, as learning by doing, through games & use of TPR (Total Physical Response) & Mother Tongue Syllabus, makes the environment conducive and enjoyable.

ISSUES IN TRADITIONAL EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM (At least at Primary level)

  • High drop out rate due to burden of syllabus

  • Different languages at school & at homes

  • Unfamiliarity of learners with text books material

  • Copying & rote memorization in practice

  • Lack of conceptual clarity

  • Poor performance because of exclusion of the learners’ language & culture from the process.
